ITS Education and Training
The Smart Travel Lab provides an ideal training tool in that it provides
a realistic, manageable traffic control environment. Traffic operators
can
work in the lab and respond to simulated or recorded conditions. This allows
operators to use approaches that may or may not work - again without impacting
the operational system. This provides an ideal environment to fine tune
one's skills.
As stated earlier, a fundamental technology that transportation engineers
will apply now and into the future is information technology. As new approaches
are developed and implemented in the lab, students must struggle with information
technology issues such as database management, object-oriented programming,
system integration, communications, user interfaces, and software configuration
management. Such experience is essential to supplement classroom instruction.
The Smart Travel Lab is an integral part of transportation education at the
university. UVA was one of the first universities in the country to offer a
graduate level course in intelligent tranportation systems. In addition, UVA
is founding member of the Consortium
for ITS Training and Education (CITE),
an innovative attempt to provide graduate level education via the internet.
