CTS open house and reception during the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Virginia

The Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Virginia hosted a three-hour open house on June 6, 2005. This coincided with the opening of the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Virginia.

Many participants attended the three-hour open house which included presentations by faculty and staff on ITS-related research activities along with tours of several research facilities.

Engineering students engage guests at their poster session during the open house.

Dr. Brian Smith, associate professor of civil engineering and the university director of the Smart Travel Laboratory, presented an overview of the Center, followed by several graduate transportation students presenting their ongoing research in a special poster session for Open House attendees.

Catherine McGhee, senior research scientist at the Virginia Transportation Council, and the co-director of the Smart Travel Laboratory, gave a presentation on the ADMS Virginia project. ADMS Virginia is a web-based system allowing access to the vast store of archived traffic data managed at the Smart Travel Laboratory. ADMS Virginia was recognized this year as one of the top 3 ITS research projects in the country by ITS America.

The open house also included a tour of the Smart Travel Laboratory, a joint facility of the University of Virginia's Center for Transportation Studies and the Virginia Department of Transportation. This laboratory focuses on ITS related research and utilizes direct links to VDOT's Smart Traffic Centers and advanced information technology to support applied research.

Dr. Brian Park, assistant professor of civil engineering, gave a demonstration of the Traffic Operations Laboratory, the Center's newest facility. This lab focuses on applied traffic signal systems research, using both advanced signal hardware and sophisticated simulation models.

The Smart Travel Van, the Center's mobile traffic data collection system, was also on display. The van can non-intrusively collect and transmit to the Center, detailed traffic data from any site in the state.

The open house ended with a walking tour of the University of Virginia's Rotunda building.

The reception continued from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Darden Court in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Guests enjoyed a delightful reception along the arcade on Darden Court.
