in Transportation
The Council of University Transportation Centers recognized Dr. Brian L. Smith,
an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia,
as the outstanding new faculty member in transportation for 2003.
The award, which was established in 2002 by CUTC
and the American Road and Transportation Builders

or researcher in transportation who has not yet
been granted tenure. Dr. Smith is only the second
recipient of the award, which was presented January
10 during the annual CUTC awards banquet in Washington, DC.
Dr. Smith was recognized for his achievements
in transportation research, his record as an excellent
teacher, and his contributions to professional
engineering organizations.
Dr. Smith is nationally regarded as a leader in
infrastructure management and information technology
in civil engineering. As the university director
of the Smart Travel Laboratory, he guides a $1.5
million annual research program focused on mitigating
congestion and providing more reliable transportation
services. To date, he has authored 35 papers in
academic journals. Dr. Smith currently serves on
three Transportation Research Board committees
focusing on the application of information systems
and technology to transportation operations. He

classroom. His innovation in this area has led
to his selection as a University of Virginia Teaching
Fellow and as the recipient of the 2003 Civil Engineering
Teaching Award.
Prior to joining the faculty of the University
of Virginia, Dr. Smith was a research scientist
at the Virginia Transportation Research Council.
Dr. Smith received his B.S. from Virginia Tech,
