Biographical Information

Michael Fontaine is a Senior Research Scientist at the Virginia Transportation Research Council and a Visiting Assistant Professor in the UVA Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Dr. Fontaine performs research in the broad areas of traffic engineering, traffic operations, and safety. Some of his specific interest areas include work zone traffic control and safety, speed management, and traffic condition monitoring using probe vehicles.

Dr. Fontaine received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and is a registered professional engineer. Prior to joining VTRC, he has worked at Old Dominion University, the Texas Transportation Institute, and as a municipal traffic engineer. Dr. Fontaine is a member of the Transportation Research Board Urban Data and Information Systems Committee and the ASCE Transportation and Development Institute’s Committee on Advanced Technologies. He also serves as a member of the FHWA Work Zone Peer-to-Peer program.
