Biographical Information

Dr. William T. Scherer received his PhD. degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia. He has taught at the University of Virginia Department of Systems and Information Engineering since 1986, developing and offering undergraduate and graduate courses in systems engineering methodology, engineering design, decision analysis, stochastic control, and operations research. His current research interests include Intelligent Transportation Systems, Markov decision processes, systems engineering methodologies, and engineering education.

Awards

• Rodman Scholars Teaching Award for 2001 for teaching excellence
• Data Warehousing Institutes Academic Scholarship for funding attendance at the 1998 Implementation Conference
• Mac Wade Award for 1996/7 for outstanding service to School of Engineering and Applied Science
• Foundation University Seminar Grant for an innovative seminar proposal on teaching “Nummeracy” to undergraduate college students (1996/8)
• Lucien Carr Professorship of Engineering for 1995-1996 for outstanding contributions to undergraduate engineering education at the University
• Distinguished Faculty at the University of Virginia in 1993 by the Student IMP Society
