Biographical Information

Shabbir Hossain is a research scientist at the Virginia Transportation Research Council. Dr. Hossain’s research areas are geotechnical and pavement engineering and he has expertise in the areas of pavement materials characterization, construction quality control and pavement rehabilitation techniques. He obtained his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Auburn University in the area of pavement materials. Dr. Hossain is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the state of Texas.

Prior to joining Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as a senior geotechnical engineer, Dr. Hossain was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University. Before joining Texas Tech, he worked for two years as a post-doctoral research associate at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and the Highway Research Center (HRC) of Auburn University. NCAT is one of the leading research organizations in the nation in the areas of hot mix asphalt pavement. During this period, Dr. Hossain performed research work for Alabama DOT and Texas DOT in the following areas: characterization of unbound aggregate for pavement, field performance of different surface treatment techniques on flexible pavement, a statistically based quality control/ quality assurance specification for hot-mix asphalt construction, sub-grade repair and stabilization using in-situ vitrification, aggregate-binder compatibility for seal coat, and pavement edge repair. Dr. Hossain’s current research work includes roller compacted concrete, characterization of unbound materials for mechanistic-empirical pavement design, and un-bonded concrete overlays.

Research Interests
