Biographical Information

Jose Gomez is an Associate Director of Research at the Virginia Transportation Research Council. The Virginia Transportation Research Council is a multi-modal research center sponsored jointly by VDOT and the University of Virginia. Dr. Gomez has responsibility for the Structural, Pavements, and Geotechnical Engineering research program.

Dr. Gomez joined VDOT in 1992 as a Research Scientist in the Structures area. He became an Associate Director of Research in 2001. He has published numerous articles on bridge design and behavior and the use of high-performance materials in bridge design. He is active on several technical committees of the National Research Council's Transportation Research Board. Dr. Gomez has served on the faculty of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department as an instructor for over ten years. In that capacity he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis and design. He received the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program Instructor of the Year Award in 2004.

Dr. Gomez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and Masters and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia, specializing in structural mechanics.
