Biographical Information

Michael J. Demetsky, PhD, is a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia and has had joint appointment with the Virginia Transportation Research Council. He received the Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. Degrees in Civil Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University. He served as the Director of the Center for Transportation Studies until 2003 where he oversaw UVA's participation in the multi-university ITS Implementation Center in Virginia, and UVA's program in the Department of Transportation's University Transportation Center (UTC) which covers Federal Region 3 through Pennsylvania State University.

He is actively involved with state, national and international professional societies and organizations. He is the President of the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) and past-president of ITS Virginia (ITSVA). He is active on numerous national committees. He has chaired the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Artificial Intelligence and the Executive Committee of the ASCE's Urban Transportation Division. He is currently a member of the ASCE Intermodal Transportation and Publications Committees of the Urban Transportation Division; TRB's Committees on Artificial Intelligence and Freight Transportation Planning and Logistics; and the Executive Committees of CUTC and ITSVA. He is a member of ITS America, the Transportation Research Forum (TRF), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Education Committee.

Awards

Professor Demetsky received the ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering, Best Paper Award, 1999, and the ASCE 1995 Frank M. Masters Transportation Engineering Award. His students have received CUTC national thesis and dissertation awards in 1994, 1995, 1998, and 2002.
