Biographical Information

Michael Brown is a Research Scientist with the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), a multi-modal research center sponsored jointly by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the University of Virginia. Dr. Brown also serves as the Smart Road Program Manager, and is responsible for overseeing VDOT's relationships with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, in Blacksburg, Virginia, home of Virginia's Smart Road.

Dr. Brown joined VDOT in 2002 as a Research Scientist in the area of Transportation Structures. He has published articles on bridge testing, bridge management and predicting service life of structures as relates to corrosion. He serves on the National Research Council's Transportation Research Board technical committee on Corrosion and Structures Maintenance. He chairs the ACI International technical committee on Bridge Construction, Maintenance and Repair and serves on the Corrosion and Service Life committees. He also serves on a National Cooperative Highway Research Program project panel aimed at advancing optimization techniques used in Bridge Management Systems.

Dr. Brown serves as a visiting assistant professor in the recently formed graduate pavements program at the University of Virginia's and teaches structural design as an adjunct faculty in School of Engineering & Applied Science. Dr. Brown holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees, as well as a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he specialized in transportation infrastructure and corrosion deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Dr. Brown is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
